Täglich sind Menschen in vielen Ländern der Welt aus unterschiedlichen Gründen gezwungen, ihre Heimat zu verlassen. Sie fliehen vor Verfolgung, vor Folter und Krieg. Dabei nehmen sie große Risiken und Strapazen in Kauf: Ihr Leben ist in ihrer Heimat nicht mehr sicher, da können sie es genauso gut für die Flucht aufs Spiel setzen.
Einige von ihnen sind in Südtirol gelandet, in der Hoffnung, hier einen Neuanfang machen zu können.

„Der Schatten des Menschen“

Wie eindrucksvoll es sein kann, hinter die Fassade von Menschen zu sehen, bewies Andrea Tremolada, Koordinator der Abteilung Flüchtlinge und Einwanderer des Verbandes Volontarius, bei seinem Besuch am 19. Oktober 2016 in der Klasse 3 Gym. Hinter seinem unscheinbaren Äußeren, seiner Gelassenheit, Bescheidenheit und Ruhe verbirgt sich ein Lebensweg, der alles andere als typisch ist für unsere Gesellschaft, in der jeder um sein persönliches Weiterkommen besorgt ist.

Eigentlich interessierte sich Andrea Tremolada nach der Matura für Waffentechnologie. Er begann ein Universitätsstudium, machte dann aber mit 19 Jahren eine Erfahrung, die sein Leben nachhaltig umkrempelte: Unterwegs mit einer Pfadfinder-Gruppe im Kosovo wurde er Zeuge, wie einem kleinen, mit einer Spielzeugpistole bewaffneten Jungen, der arglos einen Berghang hinunter lief, von einem russischen Soldaten das Bein weggeschossen wurde. Tremolada erfuhr am eigenen Leib, was es heißen kann, in einem völlig fremden Land buchstäblich vom Weg abzukommen: Die Pfadfinder verliefen sich, weil sie nicht auf der offiziellen Straße geblieben waren, und stolperten über ein Massengrab, angefüllt mit Opfern des Bürgerkriegs. Nach diesen Erlebnissen wollte er mit seinem Leben etwas wirklich Sinnvolles anfangen und begann die Arbeit bei der gemeinnützigen Organisation.

Volontarius hat sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, Flüchtlingen, die nach Südtirol kommen, Hilfe anzubieten, die drängendsten Fragen zu beantworten, Probleme zu lösen, ihnen mit Rat und Tat zur Seite zu stehen und juristische Hilfestellung zu leisten, wenn sie im Dschungel des Aufnahmeverfahrens nicht weiterwissen.

Laut Abkommen über die Rechtsstellung der Flüchtlinge in Artikel 1 der Genfer Konvention von 1951 gilt eine Person als Flüchtling, die „aus der begründeten Furcht vor Verfolgung wegen ihrer Rasse, Religion, Nationalität, Zugehörigkeit zu einer bestimmten sozialen Gruppe oder wegen ihrer politischen Überzeugung sich außerhalb des Landes befindet, dessen Staatsangehörigkeit sie besitzt, und den Schutz dieses Landes nicht in Anspruch nehmen kann oder wegen dieser Befürchtungen nicht in Anspruch nehmen will.“

Überraschenderweise erkennt die Genfer Konvention also den überwiegenden Teil der Menschen, die nach Europa immigrieren, nicht als Flüchtlinge an: weder Menschen aus Kriegsgebieten noch solche, die der Armut entkommen wollen.

Volontarius bemüht sich unter Anderem darum, den Ankommenden zu ihrem Recht auf den Flüchtlings-Status zu verhelfen, wenn sie die Bedingungen des Genfer Abkommens erfüllen. Diesen Nachweis zu erbringen, ist aber oft sehr schwer, denn wer hat schon Beweise dafür in der Tasche, dass er z.B. aufgrund seiner politischen Überzeugung verfolgt wurde.

Nur 20% der hier in Südtirol registrierten Flüchtlinge werden anerkannt und dürfen bleiben, der Rest wird abgeschoben – das System, in das sie geraten, gleiche einem Sieb, so Tremolada.
Zunächst wird ein Großteil der Flüchtlinge in sogenannten Hot Spots registriert und zwar unmittelbar dort, wo sie ankommen, z.B. in Lampedusa. Die in den Hot Spots registrierten Flüchtlinge werden dann landesweit auf verschiedene Sammel-Zentren (HUBs) verteilt. Hier warten sie auf ihr Asylverfahren und in dieser Zeit sollte eigentlich schon mehr oder weniger eine erste Integration stattfinden. Nicht immer aber gibt es genügend Plätze in den HUBs, sodass viele Migranten in ein nicht staatliches CAS (Centro d`Accoglienza straordinaria) umgesiedelt werden. Die Privatleute, die ein solches CAS betreiben, erhalten vom Staat Subventionen, weil sie dem Staat Arbeit abnehmen, die er bei dem Ausmaß des Flüchtlingsansturms offensichtlich nicht mehr selbst leisten kann.

Wenn ihr Asylverfahren abgeschlossen ist, dürfen sich die illegalen Flüchtlinge nur noch für kurze Zeit im Land aufhalten. Weil die Abschiebung in Italien aber ein großes logistisches Problem ist, die Migranten deshalb also nicht sofort wieder in ihr Ursprungsland zurückgeschickt werden, landen viele dann auf der Straße, wo sie sich die Parkbänke mit anderen teilen müssen. Ohne Dach über dem Kopf leben zu müssen und nicht zu wissen, wie es weitergeht, bedeutet in manchen Fällen, zum Verrücktwerden verurteilt zu sein. Denn ohne sinnvolle Tätigkeit ist jeder Tag wie der andere, ohne realistische Hoffnung auf Änderung der Lebensbedingungen. Andrea Tremolada berichtete zum Beweis von einem Beispiel aus eigener Anschauung: Ein Mann, den er aus der Zeit seiner Arbeit in Flüchtlingsheimen als ausgeglichen, ruhig und besonnen kannte, drehte nach Entlassung aus dem Heim durch und wurde fünf Mal verhaftet. Tremolada sah ihn bei seiner Gerichtsverhandlung wieder: Er musste mittlerweile Medikamente gegen Schizophrenie einnehmen.

Zur Verdeutlichung seiner Ausführungen über das harte Los vieler Flüchtlinge spielte Tremolada Filme ein, die uns sinnlich vor Augen führen sollten, was ständig im Meer vor unserer italienischen Haustür passiert: Flüchtlingsboote, völlig überfüllt mit erschöpften Menschen, die schließlich kentern und im schlimmsten Fall nicht mehr gerettet werden können, sondern kurz vor dem Ziel ertrinken.

Aber die Klasse war sich einig: Um wirklich zu verstehen, was es heißt, seine Heimat, seine Familie und Freunde verlassen zu müssen und sich ins Unbekannte zu begeben, bedarf es gar keiner Filme mit dramatischer Hintergrundmusik, sondern glaubwürdiger Worte von Menschen wie Tremolada, die sich mit Tatkraft und Sachverstand einer wichtigen Sache widmen und Menschen ernstnehmen, die etwas hinter sich haben, das wir uns noch nicht einmal ansatzweise vorstellen können.

Andrea Tremolada bat uns am Ende seines zweistündigen Besuchs in der Klasse, immer im Kopf zu haben, dass es verführerisch ist, in den Menschen, die hierher kommen, eine anonyme Masse zu sehen und sie alle mit einem einzigen Etikett zu versehen. Verführerisch und einfach – aber falsch.

Es sind einzelne Menschen, die eine interessante, traurige, spannende, ereignisreiche, manchmal sogar lustige Geschichte haben – jedenfalls immer viel mehr in sich tragen als das, was man sieht. Deshalb ist das Interesse für den Einzelnen auch ein Interesse an der Welt. Wir sollten in den Flüchtlingen uns selbst sehen, denn auch sie hatten einmal ein Leben mit Freunden, Familie und einem Zuhause – so wie wir.

Andrea Tremolada drückte das so aus:
„Jeder Mensch hat eine Geschichte hinter sich wie einen Schatten. Fragt danach, denn auch Ihr wollt doch, dass man nach Euch fragt und dass man Eure ganze Geschichte versteht.“

In February three student groups of our school visited a very interesting photo exhibition at St. Mark’s Basilica, in the centre of Heraklion. They all had the chance to admire and focus on the work of Aris Messinis, a Greek photo journalist working for AFP. He has recently been awarded with the ‘Visa d’Or’ prize for his powerful, moving and exceptional photos covering the dramatic flow of refugees arriving at the Aegean Sea in the hope of finding a better life. The view of piles of abandoned life-jackets, adults and little children suffering or even dying at the Greek coasts has shocked us all , but has also been the basis of a very interesting and revealing dialogue on this issue. The students exchanged thoughts and ideas about the difficulties of being a refugee. They have also reached to conclusions about volunteering and tried to find ways to help by collecting clothes and food for the people in need. Apart from admiring remarkable pieces of art, critical reflection also led the students to develop feelings of empathy and transform some perilous social stereotypes into dynamic actions for the future.

Moving between observed and narrated reality

On 10th of May we, the class 2Gym, participated in the audio project “You are, but you are not” by Lungomare.

This project consisted of listening to an audio guide while walking through parts of the city. Beginning at the station, we followed the railway continuing along Piazza Verdi and Via Marconi, finally arriving at Parco Rosegger. Using the headphones that we had put on at the beginning, we could hear the voice of a narrator who told us the realistic story of a refugee arriving in Bolzano.

He explained the feeling of being trapped by the mountains which felt like borders. This opened a door into a world in which human rights are safeguarded and it’s possible to make a new start. A door into a world that is less harmful and less dominated by fear. He revealed the situation of loneliness and being unknown in a foreign city. This let us feel connected to these refugees and what it is like to be them.

We felt authentic emotions, regarding heartbreaking memories of a so-called “outsider”. We realised the difficulties they have to go through and saw our own city from a different angle. Everyone had different experience: some felt alone but not lonely, some relaxed and some were disorientated.

We felt it was a unique experience and we hadn’t expected something like that. At the end of the audio tour we were sitting on the benches in the peaceful natural surroundings of the park. Some felt connected and others apart from the rest of the world.

On the way back to our meeting point we had to observe everything and everyone, to think about the borders we could see and find. We thought about how every door or gate or wall can be a border for someone. Perhaps a door into a world that is less harmful and less dominated by fear. The group of refugees were sitting together in a corner of the park and thought about how isolated they were from us, from our reality, from our world. Just sitting there and listening to music together. Here there was no need for walls or doors.

There had been a border between them and us, but then there was only the invisibility of borders.

At the park it was nice to work with other people with whom we usually don’t have much contact. It was interesting to hear others’ opinions and personal experiences and listen to little parts of their lives. It was also nice and friendly because we felt closer to the person.

We also talked about the word “BORDER” in Italian and it was interesting to realise what it means and how many different possibilities of interpretation it has.

This experience was something new and we would recommend it to others, because “if we don’t look into each other’s eyes, we will have nothing to say to each other.”

Teens in action

In February our school drama team was enthusiastic visiting the cartoon exhibition “MADE IN EUROPE” created by the award-winning cartoonist Michalis Kountouris (www.michaelkountouris.com). The exhibition was hosted in the Basilica of Saint Mark and was dedicated to the refugee issue. The pupils are taking part in the European programme related to refugee matters and had the opportunity to have a face-to-face interaction with the artist asking him questions and sharing thoughts and feelings with him.

After that the team visited the “info point” office, an information point office established by the Municipality of Heraklion, the Tourism Department, that makes use of innovative technologies designed and developed by the Institute of Computer Science (ICS) of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH). The pupils were informed about the history and culture of our city through a wide variety of modern technological information systems such as infocloud touch screen, live desk map, interactive printed material, interactive disk of Festos, video and picture wall, interactive illuminated stand and many more. The main entrance of the office is decorated with a high-aesthetic interactive sculpture inspired by the Labyrinth of Knossos Palace that illustrates quotes from Nickos Kazantzakis’ texts. In the “info point” office the old meets the modern and the game meets the knowledge!

Pupils from High School of Gazi visit the Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete in Rethimno within the Erasmus + Programme (KA2).

Twenty-five pupils from High School of Gazi attended a museum educational programme about the issue of refugees and immigrants. The event took place on Friday 16th December, 2016 in the Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete in Rethimno. The pupils had the opportunity to take part in experiential activities organized in the Museum aiming at stimulating their feelings as well as to understand how current social situation, such as immigration, are pointed out through contemporary art.

They also visited the exhibition “The body and other small tales” which is being hosted under the cooperation network between the Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete and the Macedonian Centre of Contemporary Art. After the visit the pupils experienced for the first time the technique of performance which uses the human body as the means for the creation of a work of art. All the pupils were intrigued and excited after the workshop in the museum. One of our pupil, Phoebe Lappa, commented: “This educational trip was a great experience. We learnt lots of things about the refugees and how all of this which is happening around us affects our lives but also inspires artists to draw or make amazing masterpieces. We played different games and saw videos that made us think about how we would feel if we were in their place. I really enjoyed this excursion and I believe I learnt new things from it”

The visit in the Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete took place within the ERASMUS+, Action KA2, Programme under the title “Omnes cives mundi sumus” in cooperation with schools in Germany, Italy, Austria and Holland. In this programme the issue of immigration and fleeing is addressed through art and ancient texts.

We would like to give a warm thanking to the Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete, the Art Director Mrs Marangou Maria, the head of Educational Section Mr Christides Costas, the museum educator Mrs Troulli Sofia and the Municipality of Rethymno for the approval of cooperation proposal with our school and the unique experience offered to our pupils.
