At the end of November / beginning of December, Wittelsbacher-Gymnasium Munich hosted the 4th project meeting on „Minorities and fringe groups in the ancient world. And today?“. Presentations by multi-national teams of students and a lecture and a guided tour by Prof Freyberger on this topic were taken as a basis for short essays from the students from Munich. Together with an essay by Dr Adami and by the project lead, they form the first part of our catalogue booklet. In the second and more comprehensive part there are pictures by the participants from Munich of symbolic or direct representations of minorities; also pictures by the Bolzano students (mostly on subject matter from Thessaloniki) are among them. In poster format these pictures form an exhibition which was shown in Munich and Bolzano and which is still available on loan.

According to the initial plans, the Munich meeting on “Minorities and Socially Disadvantaged Groups in Ancient Times. And today?” should have been the starting point of our project, as the discussion of ancient texts on this topic was intended to form the basis for subsequent work. But, as it had not been possible to travel before Easter 2022 due to Covid measures, the beginning of the “live-meetings” was marked by the joint theatrical work realized during the Amsterdam meeting (which, in its turn, had also experienced some delay). After the meetings in Amsterdam, Bozen and Kronstadt, the meeting in Munich was indeed the fourth time for the project members to meet in person. Some of the students were already well known to each other, some of them were new to the project, especially the participants from Amsterdam. At the end of November, Munich was not yet covered in snow, but temperatures were already hibernal and Christmas Markets were open, so that the guests could get an impression of “Munich in Winter”. The teams arrived at Wittelsbacher Gymnasium on Wednesday, Nov 29, and were given a warm welcome by the organizing team (Ms Krichbaumer as the leader of the project, Mr Braml, Ms Kagerer and Ms Markoff, the former responsible person for advanced training of teachers of Ancient Languages at ALP Dillingen, being in close contact to Wittelsbacher Gymnasium and (as a former English teacher) kindly co-chairing the meeting). A few 9^th grade students guided the teams through a poster exhibition on “Rebel Women Changing the World” (on lean from Evangelische Pressestelle); after lunch, participants in the former project “Democracy and its Endangerment” presented the documentation of texts and photos from that project. A first guided tour to town was under the headline “Jewish Life in Munich” (thus also covering Nazi topics), a subject matter which had received broad interest also in the Kronstadt meeting. Evening meal at “Hans im Glück” was taken in already relaxed mood enjoying lively conversation.The morning of the second day was dedicated to discussing “Minorities and Socially Disadvantaged Groups in Ancient Art”, with the students working together in international groups on various topics. Archaeologist Prof Freyberger, also a well-known guest at Wittelsbacher Gymnasium, gave a lecture on this subject matter, which was to be continued by a guided tour in the Museum für Abgüsse Klassischer Bildwerke on the following morning. In the afternoon, Mr Wagner from Museumspädagogisches Zentrum presented a guided tour in town on “Discovering Diversity: A Foreigner is only Foreign in Foreign Parts”, and convincingly showed which cultural streams from foreign regions and countries had had influence on cityscape and art of Munich. The evening of that day had – at least from the point of view of the German team – been hoped to be the joint watching of some World Cup football matches, but then the German football team had had to face its elimination from the competition.Friday morning saw a round of discussion with Deacon Ivica Viskovic on pastoral care for minorities in Munich (with emphasis on Sinti and Roma groups), followed by a continuation of the work in the teams. In the afternoon Mr Gebauer (a former teacher at Wittelsbacher Gymnasium who had also been involved in the former Erasmus project), guided the guests to some locations in town on their special demand, e.g. to Ludwigstraße; after that, the guests had the opportunity to do some sight-seeing on their own.All participants had much fun with the joint singing of carols in the evening, stimulated by Ms Kagerer, with piano accompaniment by Ms Scherbel. In addition to that, some Wittelsbacher students presented instrumental music; finally, with some considerations on “Women in Music”, focus was back to the first day – women as minorities in certain realms.On the next day, after a guided tour on “Etruscans and Etruscan Influence in Roman Society” in the Antikensammlungen, the guests were presented with a roundtable on „Refugees as a Minority in German Society” with Mr Refaat Al Ktifan, today in his early twenties, formerly an underage refugee from Syria, who finally had arrived in Germany where he had found a foster family. As this event met special interest, the social part of the afternoon was reduced to a minimum.On Sunday morning the mixed teams – chaired by Mr Haasen from Amsterdam – presented the results of their group sessions; then the first teams had already to say goodbye. These final presentations will become the foundation of the final textual documentation of the project. Without doubt, the teams are going to look forward towards the last international meeting to be held in spring in Thessaloniki, to which the organizing colleague finally invited at the end of the Munich meeting.

The last meeting in scholastic year 2020 / 21 took place on Monday, March 17; it lasted for maore than two hours.

The Netherlands participated with two presentations about the Friesians (quotations from ancient historians; one student interviewing her grandparents), then about slavery (in Rome, in Greece, in the Netherlands) and consequences of slavery in nowadays Netherlands, then in the same way also about homosexuality (in ancient Greece, in ancient Rome and in today’s Netherlands).

Thessaloniki participated with “Roma people in Thessaloniki and stereotypes about them”. Especially appreciated was the short film on Roma living in Thessaloniki; another student presented her research on Jews in Thessaloniki including her interview with a senior Jewish woman.

Later Brasov both in German and in English presented Romania as a country of diversity. In Romania today there are 19 minorities representing 11% of the population; The German minority (which may be the best-known of them) right now makes only 0.2% of the total population. The meeting closed with a presentation on Transylvanian Saxons (= ”Siebenbürgener Sachsen”) and their fortified churches, including many pictures and also some information on Swabian descendants.

All five meetings were appreciated as very successful, as they all offered colourful and diverse first steps into a variety of very fascinating topics. As awareness should be raised, how Europe or European countries deal with minorities, this virtual exchange (which was, of course, accompanied by mutual get-to-know sessions and short introductions of the participating schools) was more than successful. We will be looking forward to the following collaboration, which hopefully then will be possible via face-to-face meetings.

For the next meeting substantial time was needed. The group met again via Zoom in the afternoon of April 19, 2021, this time with considerably more participants.

Barlaeus High School followed up on their promise and informed the other participants on the situation of the Friesians in the Netherlands. Some differences with respect to way of life and perception and social intercourse with respect to the situation in Germany were shown. Moreover, the Barlaeus participants showed on what they were working in groups: The situation of gay people in the Netherlands, which seems to get worse right now; one student with Friesian grandparents wanting to know more about them; the Netherlands as multi-cultural country and the reasons for that. Students from the partnering schools interested in that subject matter were kindly invited to put questions or to join the research.

The Liceo Classico “Walther von der Vogelweide“ from Bolzano informed about the “pyramid of hate” and how mutual aversion is increased towards acts of brute force. The students also presented psychological experiments to demonstrate how to make someone into somebody feeling inferior. Alex then talked about Uighurs and how this ethnic group presently is suppressed in China.

For the next meeting, the schools from Amsterdam and Thessaloniki promised to make some contribution (the exact topic for the Greek presentation were not available at that moment). The Bolzano teachers suggested to address together the present situation in Bosnia and the planned modification of the frontier and to discuss about it.

Corona was the reason that the 3^rd Erasmus+ - project "Minorities in Europe“, eagerly adopted by all participants, could not begin with a face-to-face meeting at one of the participating schools: Plans had to be changed.

So the Wittelsbacher Gymnasium invited to a virtual kick-off meeting via MS Teams for the afternoon of Monday, Nov 16, 2020.

Agenda:

Address of Welcome and making acquaintance with the new team member Brasov High School
Short report on the present Corona-induced situation at the schools in the different countries
Discussion on the possibilities to start working on the project in spite of limitations:
- Building a base for texts and material (Munich, Bolzano)
- Introducing the planned theatrical play (R. Haasen, Amsterdam)
- Possible preliminary work for the planned documentation (language minorities, texts on minorities in classical age)
- Possibilities to use ETwinning
Agreement on further dates and goals
- Virtual meeting of teachers and students
- Further topics (to be updated from the discussion)
Open topics (e.g. necessary tools, platforms, …)

Dear colleagues in Amsterdam, Bolzano, Brasov, and Thessaloniki,

If life were as normal as it used to be until this winter, we would have met in mid-November for a kick-off meeting for our new Erasmus project and would now be in Munich, busy with the necessary preparations. In spite of all adversities, the project will be supported and has started in September with a duration of 23 months, so we should discuss what will be possible in the upcoming school half-year in spite of all limitations.

Martina Adami kindly will send around the invitation and prepare the environment for the meeting, since her school is well experienced in the use of MS Teams. Sincere thanks to her, and have a good time, if possible!

Maria Krichbaumer and Markus Braml

The Wittelsbacher Gymnasium, acting as the school inviting to the first virtual meeting, requested all participating students and teachers to reflect on the following topics:

What is (in your opinion) a minority?
Where do you meet members of minorities in your vicinity / in your country?
Which minorities from history do you know?

Then a few of the Munich participants presented their collection of ideas on the wide topic “European minorities”:

Julius introduced the results of his recherche on minorities in Germany, Friesians, Sorbs, etc.

Daniel, the Munich anchorman doing a very pleasant and skillful job, invited all participants to gather in international groups and do a joint recherche on various topics. This led to the participants from the Netherlands wanting to work on Friesians in the Netherlands.

Some more topics have been considered, e.g.

Real persons as representatives of minorities (case studies) or
Transformation of the subject matter into a work of art.

Also discussed were possible methods of realization like presentations, podcasts, interviews, etc.

Moreover, Richard Haasen introduced his idea for a scenic play for this project, distributed a textual basis and made connection to supporters in the different participating High Schools.
